Already There [by Shirley Balance Blackwell] is rich with memorable images and adventurous in form and subject: a beautifully shaped collection of poems. Blackwell writes with wit and with heart. Whether she’s writing about Euclid, or the desert landscape, or spiders, or even a Hoover vacuum cleaner, one senses a great inquisitiveness and energy in her observations.

In a Rose Wood Wandering by Jeanne Shannon is a collection of poems, stories, meditations, and reveries that explore facets of the word and the idea of Rose. It roams through gardens, orchards, and forests burgeoning with large and small members of the family Rosaceae, visits women named Rose, and even looks at rose-patterned china teacups and silver spoons with roses on their handles. |

Shirley Balance Blackwell grew up as a "desert rat" in Arizona and New Mexico but became captivated by the mid-Atlantic seacoast during a career in Washington, D.C. devoted to national security issues. Blackwell returned to her beloved New Mexico for her last federal assignment, and is now enjoying retirement in a village south of Albuquerque with her husband, Louis, and two large rescue dogs. |

Jeanne Shannon grew up in rural southwest Virginia, in a farming community attuned to the Earth and its plant and animal life. Members of the rose family were abundant, and the region was known for its apple orchards. Early on she became interested in the fact that plants are divided into families, and the huge family group that includes the rose captured her special attention. She has published three full-length collections of her work and several chapbooks. She lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. |
